Cappielow Park, Cappielow Park Sinclair Street Greenock PA15 2TY

Another of the Scottish Football League grounds to encounter greyhound racing was Cappielow Park, the home of Greenock Morton Football Club.

The venue had staged league football since 1879 having been built on grazing land close to the docks. It wasn’t until the summer of 1933 that a greyhound track was laid around the football pitch, before staging its first meeting on the 12th of August 1933.

Little is known how long racing lasted but it is suggested was brief, its last gathering reported in a newspaper was December 1933. It was during 1937 that another attempt to bring greyhound racing back to the town, albeit at another venue, failed.

Today, Cappielow continues to host Scottish League football, but with improvements over the years the venue is a totally different place from the days of dog racing.

This local press cutting dated August 25th 1933 proves that greyhound racing did take place at Cappielow Park.
