Lower Road, Mountnessing, Brentwood, Essex, CM15

The Essex town and the surrounds of Brentwood have hosted Greyhound Racing at more than one venue over the years. This chapter covers the one that featured during the early 1930’s, just outside a small village called Mountnessing.

Mountnessing lies just off the busy A12, two miles northeast of Brentwood, heading out towards Chelmsford. The venue was known as The Brentwood Greyhound Track and had developed on a field east of the junction between Lower Road and the B1002 Roman Road.

This area was known as Chain Bridge, and was found just South of the village, with the tracks first meeting coming on 21st July 1931. Other details remain sketchy, but it is known that racing did feature the following July and also operated a tote system, other than that no other information is available.

Today the site is questionable on where it once was, but it is possible that two luxury homes have been built on the presumed field.
