Pickering Recreation Ground, Pickering, North Yorkshire YO18 7DB
The present-day Pickering Recreation Ground is more recognised as the venue to the towns cricket and football clubs. The grounds lie adjacent to Mill Lane, found within a few hundred yards, south of Pickering town centre.
It may come as a surprise that it once hosted The Pickering Greyhound Derby, an event run annually over a distance of 300 Yards. The rails for the track became laid temporarily around the cricket pitch and consisted of two bends.
First indications of Greyhound Racing at the venue, are found in a 1957 advert from The Greyhound Owner, but racing may have featured prior to this date. The newspaper also suggested that Pickering ran its final Greyhound Derby at The Rec during 1966, with the event being staged the following year at another temporary track known as Caulklands, at nearby Thornton Le Dale, a village found three miles to the east of Pickering.
