Thorpe Lane, Tingley, Wakefield WF3
Tingley is a small town located approximately six miles south of Leeds city centre, just off junction 28 of the M62. Evidence of Greyhound Racing is suggested in an advert found in The Greyhound Owner of May 1971. It was around this period that the nearby M62 Motorway lay under construction, meaning that the M62 may well not have been opened at that time of these events.
The actual site of the races took place on a five-acre section of land, located at the rear of Clydesdale Bungalow, a property found west of the A654, yet within a matter of a few hundred yards north of the busy M62.
Very little is known regarding whether the event ever took place or not, as nothing more is mentioned of any activities at the venue, during the following issues of Greyhound Owner. Even the racing distance is not shown, although presumably the races would have been run over a straight gallop, with the greyhounds more than likely chasing a drag hare.
It advertises Bookmakers in attendance, which would mean that the promoter must have acquired a license from the Council to go ahead with temporary meetings.
Today, finding the location of the site should be quite easy, as The Clydesdale Bungalow is still there and inhabitable, and is clearly evident along the side of the busy A654. But as for any reminders of Greyhound Racing, the chances of finding anything of interest are virtually nil.
