Rear Tollgate Hotel, Old Mill Lane, Barnsley, South Yorkshire S71

More recognised for staging Cricket, Football, Gala’s and Whippet Racing, The Dearne Sports Stadium located on the outskirts of Barnsley can only be included in Greyhound Racing Times website, due to staging odd greyhound racing events.

It is known Whippet racing commenced at the latter end of September 1934 and would continue to do so until the end of Summer 1935. The local press also advertised for entrants for staging open greyhound racing events during early 1935 on a couple of occasions, but it remains unclear whether these events took place.

The site of this venue lay about one mile north of Barnsley town centre, in the district of Old Mill, set on a patch of grassland situated east of the River Dearne, and at the rear of The Tollgate Hotel, located along Old Mill Lane.

Although this sports field still exists, sadly The Tollgate Hotel does not, its site now covered by new business units, situated along the side of the A61, one of which is run by The Salvation Army.
