Hilperton Road, Trowbridge, Wiltshire, BA14

The early 1950’s had witnessed a mini boom of temporary Greyhound Racing venues throughout the county of Wiltshire. Yet the town of Trowbridge can boast that it staged racing at more than one venue within its vicinity.

The more commonly known location was the town’s football ground situated along Frome Road, but this paragraph does explain a lesser familiar one that existed on an old cricket field. The venue, marked on maps as a Sportfield, was situated along Hilperton Road, roughly half a mile northeast of Trowbridge’s town centre.

Local press indicates that it would stage a series of meetings during August and September of 1950, but how many was staged is not clear. The Sportfield no longer exists, as the site is now partially covered by an Autism Care Home, and also land which lies between the care home and a busy roundabout.
