VENUE BACK GROUND

There has been a horse racecourse in Wolverhampton since 1825, in what is now the West Park, where the Park Road follows the line of the track. This was sold to the Corporation in 1878 and, after a gap of nine years, a new course was formed at Dunstall Park.

In 1993, the final National Hunt meeting took place at Wolverhampton. In December of the same year, the course was re-vamped with floodlights and a new all-weather Fibresand track that ran alongside the turf track. A hotel, new grandstand, restaurant and executive boxes were also built at this time.

In 1999, the course was bought from private ownership by Arena Leisure (now Arena Racing Company). In 2004 the Fibresand and turf tracks were replaced with a single Polytrack surface, as well as refurbishment of the hotel and conference facilities. Since that time the course has only held flat all weather races. A tapeta surface was installed in 2014.

The above picture taken in August 2025 shows the greyhound racing track being built inside the horse race all weather circuit.

The first trial session at Dunstall Park BELOW took place on Wednesday 27th August 2025 and featured mostly greyhounds transferred from Perry Barr which held it’s final meeting on Saturday 23rd August.

Sovereign Poppy won the first ever race at the DUNSTALL PARK venue on Monday 8th September 2025. The dog previously won it’s last race at PERRY BARR on August 20th before trialling twice at the new venue.

READING Riverside Track

The suburb of Tilehurst is located west of Reading town centre. More known to its link to greyhound racing with the old, licensed track known as the Tilehurst Stadium.

But what is revealed by past newspapers is that a flapping track did exist within exaggerated a stone’s throw away from the more established venue.

First gatherings took place during 1931 and would continue to stage meetings into 1935. Although its location has yet to be confirmed, my presumption of where it lay was on the west side of Scours Lane, just north of the railway embankment. It was enclosed by rusty steel corrugated sheeting.

The site suggested is now covered by Riverside Park Homes.

In April 1936 the Riverside track applied for betting license under the 1934 Betting and Lotteries Act. The clipping below suggests the application was refused and this most likely led to the closure of the track

LODDON BRIDGE

Newspaper cuttings reveal that a Greyhound and Whippet track existed near Loddon Bridge, a structure situated northwest of the village of Winnersh in in the county of Berkshire.

The village of Winnersh itself lies two miles northwest of Wokingham and four miles southeast of Reading. Loddon Bridge is a road bridge that crosses the River Lodden which was once the main link between Reading and Wokingham known today as the A329. The track itself was located in the grounds of the Lodden Tea Gardens which lay southwest of the bridge. Little is revealed on how the track operated but due to its brief existence it is thought that the 400-yard two bend track staged three meetings per week. Its first gathering was on the 26th of May 1933, but it is not revealed how many further meetings were staged after that. My assumption of were the track once lay, is now covered by land occupied by Pets Corner and its surrounds just off Reading Road in Winnersh.
