Buckhurst Road (near Biggin Hill Areodrome) Kent
One of the few temporary greyhound racing venues found in Kent was the at Westerham Hill, a location found roughly two and a half miles South East of Biggin Hill Airport.
The straight track lay on farmland along side Buckhurst Road, and offered distances of 295 and 315 yards. Its operational dates are found during 1969 and 1974, and is not revealed how many more meetings took place, but it is known that spot grading was used to assess the hounds. The exact location is not known.
My Grandfather Tom English and I raced dogs at Biggin hill. We won a sixty pound open and I still have the trophy the Westerham Cup. Raced at Loudwater straight as well. Won a few opens there. Early 1970’s.
Thank you for your email response. Do you have any race cards from this period?
Afraid not Graham, however I have a book out in the spring called the Greyhound Alchemist about our adventures at flapping tracks and straight.
And I think there was racing there until 1976,then it was Sunday morning racing.
No spot grading you paid your money to enter race and the was it. There were many big time trainer’s from licensed tracks there with dogs.
