The village of Birtley lies roughly three miles north of Chester-le-Street in County Durham. Probably the village is more associated with its close proximity to the Pelaw Grange Greyhound Stadium just over a mile to the south. Evidence shows that it did infact stage Greyhound Racing at a venue more nearer its town centre, with the venue capable of accommodating nearly 5,000 racegoers, yet this figure is doubtful that it would ever have been tested, as its operational period lasted through 1946 and 1947 only. Its exact location or how it operated still remains a mystery.
