Tower Ground, New Brighton, Wallasey CH45 2PP

It is known that greyhound racing took place at New Brighton, a coastal town found on the north western edge of the Wirral in Cheshire,

The venue was known as The Tower Grounds a sporting entertainments complex that developed around 1900. The venue was very spacious indeed, and hosted a huge 570 feet high steel tower, a structure that happened to be fifty feet higher than Blackpool Tower and could be seen from miles around.

The purpose-built venue become the home to athletics and cycling, with a football pitch in the middle. New Brighton Football Club had made it their home, a team who experienced a handful of seasons in the Football League.

In 1933, Speedway had become another sport to join the ranks, but the venture lasted for no more than two seasons only, ending due to local residents complaining about noise. By the end of the 1960’s Stock Car Racing had also featured, and in 1970 Greyhound Racing made a handful of appearances, but without much success.

Little is known about any details, but no doubt its brief appearance was on a temporary council license. The venue was demolished during the late 1970′ and was covered by housing around Rakersfield Road which are located roughly half a mile west of New Brighton train station.
