Popefield Farm, Hatfield Road, Smallford, St. Albans AL4 0HW

The small Hertfordshire hamlet of Smallford is situated three and a half miles west of St Albans and lies very close to junction 11 on the A1M. It also became the home to a Greyhound Racing and Grass Track Speedway venue that was constructed in a field just north of Oaklands Lane roundabout.

The venue developed on farm grazing land after a grass track speedway track was laid in 1936, but as far as Greyhound Racing little is known, but possibly offered the sport on a temporary license during the late 1930’s before fading away. After a small stand had been erected in 1939,

The Smallford Stags Speedway team disbanded prior to the outbreak of the Second World War, with the venue returning to farming duties from then on.

Today, a cluster of trees and vegetation, actually identifies the position of where the track was, in a meadow situated between Notcutts Garden Centre and Popefield Farm, just half a mile north of a roundabout that serves the A1057 trunk road.

This 1937 OS Map shows the venue just below centre.
