Stedlyn, Sittingbourne, Kent

The small hamlet of Lynsted is situated four miles south east of Sittingbourne in Kent. It is in this hamlet that the Stedlyn Schooling Track existed.

The venue became very popular with licensed trainers from around the London area, having gained a reputation of producing top class pups after being schooled there. Although it may have been a schooling track, it found itself as an addition to the list of temporary greyhound racing venue’s, by staging meetings organised by its track membership scheme.

These gatherings became legal, and took place on a council license which allowed eight fixtures to take place during each year, with bookmakers also allowed to stand. Spot grading was used to assess the hounds, and meetings were run normally on a Saturday afternoon, due to track not having sufficient track-side lighting.

It is known that these meetings took place during the late 1960’s and early 1970’s, but it is suggested that the venue closed for schooling during 1974. The venue remained active as a boarding kennels there on after, and it is known that some of the tracks outbuildings remained until 2004, before the land was leveled for the construction of new housing.

Housing situated on St Peters Place in Lynsted now pinpoints the site on were the track once lay.
