It is known that a temporary greyhound track was laid in the vicinity of Harrogate in West Yorkshire. The spa town of Harrogate lies roughly fifteen miles north of Leeds city centre, with a cutting from a Greyhound Owner newspaper suggesting that greyhound racing took place during the Autumn of 1949. Events took place on the Knaresborough Road Showfield in Starbeck, a sports field located roughly one mile east of Harrogate town centre. Although events proved popular with over 2,000 attending its first gathering, yet attempts to gain permission for a permanent venue failed. The sportsfield no longer exists as Shaw’s Trailer Park now covers the site.

Two newspaper reports the arrival of greyhound racing at Harrogate. The above dated Aug 18th 1949 below August 24th 1949.
This cutting was printed in The Greyhound Owner of September 1949.
