Hirwaun Workmen’s Track, Aberdare, County of Glamorgan

The village of Hirwaun lies roughly 4 miles north west of Aberdare in South Wales. Hirwaun becomes another temporary Greyhound Racing venue which existed throughout the mid 1930’s.

The tracks exact location still remains unsolved, but research does reveal that the track was in the vicinity of Trewaun, which is located about half a mile south east of Hirwaun town centre. Known to locals as The Hirwaun Workmen’s Greyhound track, operations is thought to have begun during 1933 and therefore would continue to stage regular meetings up until 1937.

It is known that the tracks proprietor was a lady in the name of Mrs Harriett Dovey, but further information on how it operated and its exact location remains vague. My presumption regarding events printed in the local press is that the track was located somewhere adjacent to Brecon Road, and the site today lies very close to a roundabout that links the A465 and the A4059 main roads.

An application for a betting license printed in the local press dated February 15th 1935.
